SPAIN FIELD ATLAS · 02 AUG 2027

Find your place in the shadow.

A decision atlas for the 2027 total solar eclipse in Spain. Compare totality, historical sky conditions, access, stays and backup options before choosing your base.

Field rule: Don’t choose a town from duration alone. The best base is the one that keeps more than one good sky option within reach.

Eclipse Readiness Score

Duration is only one part of a good eclipse plan.

Our v1 score combines historical cloud signal, totality, weather-escape flexibility, access, accommodation and operational resilience. The method is public and every editorial input is labelled.

Eye safety

Totality is brief. Protect your eyes for everything around it.

During the partial phases before and after totality, direct solar viewing requires proper solar viewers. Ordinary sunglasses are not enough.

1

Use proper solar viewers

Choose eclipse glasses or handheld viewers that conform to ISO 12312-2 and come from a trustworthy supplier.

2

Only remove them during totality

Eye protection can come off only when the Sun’s bright face is completely covered. Put it back on as soon as bright sunlight reappears.

3

Optics need their own front filter

Never look through an unfiltered camera, binoculars or telescope, even while wearing eclipse glasses. Solar filters belong on the front of the optics.

4

Inspect before use

Discard viewers that are scratched, torn, punctured or otherwise damaged, and supervise children using them.

Commercial link ≠ safety approval. Before buying any solar viewer, verify the manufacturer/seller and that the product conforms to ISO 12312-2 using current AAS/NASA guidance.

FAQ

The questions that change the plan.

Short answers first. The full FAQ goes deeper into weather, traffic, safety and international alternatives.

When is the 2027 total solar eclipse?

Monday, 2 August 2027. In southern mainland Spain the maximum occurs around 10:50 CEST, with exact times depending on your coordinates.

Where is totality visible in Spain?

The path covers Ceuta and Melilla, almost all of Cádiz province, much of Málaga province and the southernmost parts of Granada and Almería. Outside the path, the eclipse is partial.

Is Spain the only European country with totality?

Yes. For the 2 August 2027 eclipse, Spain is the only European country crossed by the path of totality.

Where does totality last longest in Spain?

Among the official headline city figures published by IGN, Ceuta reaches about 4m48s, Melilla about 4m34s, Cádiz about 2m54s and Málaga about 1m48s. Exact duration changes from point to point.

What is the best place in Spain to see it?

There is no universal winner. Tarifa is our mainland all-round pick; Estepona is strong for weather-plus-comfort; Ceuta maximizes headline duration; Málaga maximizes international access. Use the ranked Best Places guide for the trade-offs.

Is Egypt better than Spain for the 2027 eclipse?

Astronomically, Luxor is stronger: about 6m22s of totality and an exceptionally dry historical cloud signal. Spain is easier for many European travelers and offers more familiar road-trip and backup-base logistics. “Better” depends on what you optimize.
